FOSTERING CREATIVITY*
1. Creativity in the Morning
• Build in 15 extra minutes to your child’s morning schedule. Give your child 15 minutes of free play as part of your new morning routine.
• Create a Creative Walk to the car. Encourage your child to create a “unique creative walk” to the car. Use an animal for inspiration… “stomp like an elephant” or “hop like a bunny”.
2. Creativity in the Car
• Ask “What If” questions: “What if rivers were made of chocolate”? Keep asking open ended prompts like “what would happen next” to build a story.
• Name 10 Things Game: Name a category and try to come up with 10 things. For example, animals: dog, cat, horse, etc…
3. Creativity at Snack Time
• Play and Build with Food. Lay out fruit and toothpicks for your child to eat, build
and play.
• Let your child choose their own snack. Have a snack drawer or cabinet filled with
healthy choices for your child to chose their own snack.
4. Creativity in the Afternoon
• Make time for unstructured free play. Unstructured free play is child-directed and
screen free.
• Go outside. Play tag, dig in the dirt, go on a neighborhood walk or encourage free
play outside.
5. Creativity during Dinner Prep
• Set up an open Invitation to Create.
• Create a DIY drum set with a few wooden spoons and pots and have an impromptu
dance party.
6. Creativity at Bedtime
• Tell a Story About Your Day. Take turns telling about your day. Share a favorite
moment or include a problem you overcame during the day. Make it silly to keep
your child engaged.
• Read a book and have your child make the sound effects for the characters
